Meet Charlie Thomas

boy

Congratulations! You are officially the owners of Charlie Thomas – a 4 year old, bay gelding claimed out of the 5th race at Golden Gate Fields today.

Charlie Thomas was claimed out of a $10,000 Claimer going 1 mile on the Turf. He finished a game second after racing on the lead.

Here’s what we liked (Charlie Thomas Past Performances):

He was claimed out of his last start for $12,500 when he ran 5th and in today for $10,000, but he’s got class. What does this mean? It means that last year he was good enough to run in both the $50,000 Seattle Slew Handicap and the $50,000 Coca Cola Handicap. He finished third in both those races behind the likes of Del Rio Harbor and Noosito (Emerald Downs Three Year Old of the Meet). While we don’t know what level he will run at this year, he has quality behind him.

He’s 4 years old with 22 lifetime starts, 3 wins, 5 seconds and 4 thirds for an in the money (ITM) percentage of 57%.

Although he has a gap in his past performances from July 13, 2014 to December 13, 2014, he has raced each month since, indicating he recovered from whatever put him on the shelf.

He has raced on turf, dirt and synthetic with good results suggesting that he is versatile enough to run on all surfaces.

Trainer Larry Ross will advise us on the best time to ship him to Emerald Downs after we see how he comes out of his race.

  1. I saw in the charts he was claimed by Larry for Sharon Ross and I wondered if he might be our horse. Obviously, he likes the track here. This looks to be a great claim! Welcome back, Charlie Thomas!

  2. Oh my gosh, I have tears in my eyes, can’t wait to meet our racehorse! I am so excited! Welcome, welcome Charlie! Of course, I love all the horses! They really are all so sweet!

  3. Oh my goodness, I too though can’t wait to see his potential and look forward to watching him run in a major race and maybe Winner’s Circle; here we come!

  4. Hi Sophia,

Hey, I remember Charlie Thomas Spooners used to own him. He ran a nice race in the Coca Cola Handicap last year. He¹s a much classier horse than the ones we had last year this could be a LOT of fun.

  5. I’m so looking forward to this year. Charlie is much better quality than I expected. I like what I see. I’m also looking forward to meeting my fellow owners at orientation on the 19th. Hang on…..it’s going to be a fun year!

  6. Hi everyone

Great to be part of this club… and nice horse

Question for Sophia… other than the $10k we spent to get Charlie, did we spend money to pay the trainer? or any fees? vet bills ? JUst trying to understand all the costs involved…

    • Hi John,

Great questions! Every dollar will be accounted for on a monthly basis with each charge explained. We’ll recap April bills the first or second week in May once they’ve all come in. But what you’ll expect to see is a “day rate” for training Charlie Thomas in California which is slightly higher than Emerald Downs. No fee for dropping the claim since Larry is still there and did it in person. We also like to have the vet give vaccinations and check teeth to make sure the horse is healthy and has no issues. Then if he gets a green light, we’d expect shipping from California.

So initially there’s just the $10K plus tax for the claim, and then subsequent training bills.

  7. I think we should run him once while he is in jail and then drop him to a $8,000 claiming race. I would be surprised if we lost him

    • Hi Craig,

Running him once at Golden Gate would get him “out of jail.” However, all 188 Emerald Racing Club members would have to get licensed in California if he were to run for the Club. We like to use the 45 day jail time to let him freshen up and get accustomed to the dirt track at Emerald Downs.

      • What I meant was once he is at Emerald run him for $12,500 and then drop him to $8,000.
