Charlie Thomas Runs Second

Charlie gave us a thrill with another game effort to finish second to Coach Royal – a horse that is now 4 for 4 for the meet.

Full chart is here.

You can watch the replay at http://www.emeralddowns.com>Racing>Race Replays.

And a special congratulations to Mary Beth and Jim Perkins (Aithon Stable LLC), members of the 2014 Emerald Racing Club, who won the Washington Oaks with their fine filly Belle Hill.

  1. Charlie just continues to improve every time he’s ran at Emerald this year. Charlie moved up in class but you’d never have know that just watching the race unfold. Charlie ran his fastest mile of the meet by 2 whole seconds and pushed an incredible horse in Coach Royal to improve his own best of the meet by 1.5 seconds.
Today I’m as proud of Charlie as I’ve ever been.
If anyone has Charlies full chart in front of them is this the fastest mile time of Charlies career?
Also being that we are within 7 weeks of the time that we wish to sale Charlie, the prospect of doing so at a handsome profit seems very likely after such and incredible effort and race.

  2. Does anyone have a spare souvenir bet ticket from the race that Charlie won on July 11th? It’s the only one we’re missing, if you have one let me know and we can trade it for a bet in today’s feature race or something.

  3. Charlie ran a monster race, he was 7 3/4 lengths in front of the 3rd place horse. The only difference between Coach Royal & Charlie was that Charlie did not save as much ground during the race. Coach Royal had the 1 post & saved a lot of ground around the 1st turn. Otherwise we probably had another win today.

  4. I am so proud of Charlie and the Ross’s and all who work at the barn getting him in his best shape ever. What a jump up in class and to push Coach Royal to post his fastest time. WOW Watching the race it looked to me that Coach Royal was stalking Charlie not letting him get to the lead. Charlie was the horse to beat in that race, and everyone knew it. Then it looked like he nudged him to the outside in the far turn so Charlie have more distance to cover. It was a great ride by both jockey’s. And such a thrilling stretch run, I thought for sure he was going to pull away by a nose 10 more feet and he would have won. There is no quit in him and Charlie Thomas made it a thrilling day at the races. (Sharon did you change his shoes, maybe he needed new shoes again …. just joking)

    • Replying to myself I see now that there are no stakes races left on the schedule that Charlie really qualifies for. Which is good because I would rather see him win at the current level than run 3rd in a stakes race.

  5. Charlie ran a GREAT race yesterday, and nearly pulled off another win. Didn’t honestly think he would win this race because of his competition, but he acquitted himself so well that he has nothing to be ashamed of in coming in second. I just heard on the Win Place Show this morning that Coach Royal started at the meet at the $2500 claiming level, and now he’s racing at the $25,000 level. For Charlie to nearly beat him says a lot. Sharon said before the race Charlie would be in tough company in this race, but that she was pretty sure he would not be claimed. Hope he got an extra carrot or two and some mints to reward him for his effort. He’s a champ with a lot of heart!

Gina’s conflation of Charlie’s name with Tribal’s is understandable, and I’ve done it myself when telling people about the two of them. Big thanks to the Rosses and their team, and Leslie Mawing, for their great work with Charlie and Tribal.

  6. A thrilling race! I watched from home and it was great to see Charlie run so well and fun to hear to pre-race commentary, giving Charlie and ERC some hometown love!

  7. Charlie Thomas has huge Heart! After a big jump in class, he improved by 9 lengths to just miss to a tough horse. he wins the race at 1 & 1/16th. Nice job Larry and Sharon with Charlie’s training!

  8. Well what a thrill seeing Charlie Thomas run against such a strong field and to finish 2nd at the wire great ride by Leslie again it just shows me that the Ross barn is one of the best for sure way to go Larry and Sharon keep up the great work and please pat all your worker on the back for such a great job they are doing for the emerald downs racing club as it has been fun for sure
